Older adults are increasingly targeted by digital scams, often facing devastating financial and emotional consequences. In response, the NC Digital Futures Program recently led a specialized Scam Prevention class at the Rocky Mount Senior Center to help older residents stay safe and confident in today’s online environment.

The workshop addressed common scams such as phishing emails, fraudulent phone calls, and online deception schemes. Through hands-on instruction and discussion, participants learned how to identify potential threats, protect their personal information, and respond effectively when faced with suspicious activity.

“This class is about more than just awareness—it’s about empowerment,” said the instructor. “We want seniors to feel confident using digital tools without fear of being taken advantage of.”

The session is part of a broader effort by the NC Digital Futures Program to provide essential digital skills training across the state, particularly in underserved and vulnerable communities. By equipping older adults with tools to recognize and avoid scams, the program helps promote financial security, personal independence, and peace of mind for participants and their families.

This initiative represents a vital step in safeguarding the well-being of North Carolina’s aging population in an increasingly digital world.
