Collapse ▲NC State Extension Farmworker Health and Safety education, under Community and Rural Development, will lead and execute the “Healthy Farm, Strong Agriculture” project in partnership with The NC Agricultural Foundation, Inc.
The “Healthy Farm, Strong Agriculture” project was awarded $194,888.00 by the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission and to be implemented by the NC State Extension Farmworker Health and Safety Education program in collaboration with the County Cooperative Extension Centers. The project’s funded target counties are Edgecombe, Nash, and Wilson(N.E.W.).
The project will provide a menu of training options to farmers, helping them to target farm health and safety needs and assist with mandatory training compliance needed for GAP certification and EPA Worker Protection Standards. The training will be available to be conducted on-farm and multi-farm at the Community sites.
The project outcomes include increasing knowledge and preventive behaviors to produce high-quality crops, providing a healthy work environment, and increasing the ease of compliance with mandatory training.
PROJECT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
- Provide a menu of training options to farmers helping them to target farm health and safety needs and assist with mandatory and mandatory training compliance needed for GAP certification and EPA WPS to be the go-to source for on-farm health and safety training.
- Increase on-farm health and safety through training.
- Provide pesticide applicator training in Spanish to increase the pass rate of farm workers, which will increase farm productivity and the quality of the workforce on the farm.
