In Bertie County, a woman was struggling after learning that her 38-year-old son had been diagnosed with a life-threatening brain disorder. She wanted to support him. She felt overwhelmed and unsure how to help.

During a one-on-one home visit, a local Digital Skills Educator with N.C. Cooperative Extension helped her use technology in a thoughtful and constructive way. Together, they found online support groups, reviewed Facebook Messenger for communication, and discussed how to evaluate health information for credibility.

The educator also introduced generative AI as a supportive tool for organizing questions, researching general information, and processing emotions. Just as importantly, the educator taught safe and appropriate AI prompting, making clear that AI should support—not replace—medical advice.

The visit also included setting up the Libby app so she could access digital library books related to the diagnosis.

By the end of the visit, the participant felt more confident, better informed, and more prepared to support her family with care and respect. This story shows how trusted local digital skills education can make AI practical, personal, and deeply human.
