Artificial intelligence is often presented as something new, distant, or difficult to understand. In Bertie County, Rebecca Jinnette, Digital Skills Educator with N.C. Cooperative Extension, helped rural residents see AI in a more familiar way.

On March 26, 2026, Rebecca hosted the first “Exploring AI” Lunch and Learn session in collaboration with Sarah Tinkham from Fybe High Speed Internet. The session used the Senior Planet lecture “Everyday Uses of AI” and introduced participants to what AI is, how it has developed, and how it has already been part of daily life for decades.

Nineteen participants attended, a strong turnout for the community. Many arrived with uncertainty, but the conversation helped reduce apprehension. Learning that AI has been used in common tools and systems for more than 40 years helped participants move from fear toward curiosity.

This session highlights the importance of personal engagement. Trusted local educators can place new technologies in familiar context and help residents feel more prepared to participate in a changing digital world.
