For many residents, AI is not first encountered in a classroom. It appears unexpectedly on a phone, in an app, or in a setting they did not choose.

On April 22, 2026, Rebecca Jinnette, Digital Skills Educator with N.C. Cooperative Extension, worked one-on-one with a Bertie County client who was frustrated and fearful because Gemini kept appearing on her Android phone.

Rebecca helped the client understand what was happening. She walked her through Google and Gemini settings and helped configure the device to better fit her needs. The interaction was personal, practical, and reassuring.

By the end, the resident had moved from confusion to control. She better understood what was happening on her own device and had the confidence to make informed choices.

This story illustrates why individualized digital skills support matters. For some residents, AI education begins with a simple question: “Why is this on my phone?” A trusted local educator can turn that moment of fear into a moment of empowerment.
