Artificial intelligence can feel overwhelming when it is introduced through technical language or distant examples. In Pender County, Howard Wallace, Digital Skills Educator with N.C. Cooperative Extension, helped make AI practical, understandable, and relevant to daily life.

On March 24, 2026, Howard led an Artificial Intelligence session with 15 participants. The workshop focused on how generative AI can be used to organize, format, and work with trusted information. Participants also discussed privacy and personal data concerns, helping them better understand both the opportunities and risks of using AI tools.

The results were encouraging. Twelve participants reported improved confidence, and 11 reported significant skill gains. One participant shared that Howard’s session was clearer and more useful than an online AI course they had previously taken.

This story shows the value of local, trusted education. When residents can learn in person, ask questions, and connect AI to real needs, emerging technology becomes less intimidating and more useful.
