SMITHFIELD, N.C. – North Carolina agriculture depends on the thousands of farmworkers who help plant, tend, and harvest crops each season. Farm Labor Contractors (FLCs) play a vital role in our food system, connecting growers with the workforce that sustains the state’s agricultural economy. To support them, N.C. State Extension, Agricultural Workforce Health and Safety Education program will host a Farm Labor Contractor Workshop titled: The Successful Contractor: Profit, Employees, and Productivity on October 6, 2023, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Johnston County Cooperative Extension Center.
This educational workshop is specifically designed for agricultural Farm Labor Contractors, both new and experienced, to help them stay informed about labor regulations, workforce management, and best practices that strengthen the farm labor system. The program will be delivered in Spanish to better reach and serve the contractors who work directly with farmworkers, but all are welcome to attend as simultaneous interpretation will be provided.
A special highlight will be the keynote address from Joe Martinez, CEO of CIERTO, an internationally recognized leader in ethical recruitment. Martinez has been instrumental in building fair and transparent recruitment systems for agricultural workers, recognized by the International Labor Organization, the UN, and the U.S. federal government. His message will emphasize how investing in the workforce is essential to the future of agriculture.
Participants will walk away with practical knowledge, resources, and connections that will help them improve compliance, strengthen their workforce, and support North Carolina agriculture. Please share with farm labor contractors, farm operations that may be using farm labor contractors or anyone interested in becoming a farm labor contractor.
Dinner will be provided, sponsored by AAALP.
