In Bertie County, AI became part of a larger story of resilience after job loss.

On May 6, 2026, Rebecca Jinnette, Digital Skills Educator with N.C. Cooperative Extension, supported a local community leader who had lost her job at a food pantry because of funding issues. The need was immediate and personal. She needed to identify job opportunities, update her resume, and strengthen her job search materials.

Rebecca worked with her in person, by phone, and by email. Together, they used Google Workspace, generative AI, and other digital tools to improve her resume and support the job search process. Rebecca also encouraged her to enroll in the NC Work From Anywhere course for continued skill development.

This support went beyond technology training. It provided encouragement, structure, and practical next steps during a difficult transition.

The story shows how AI skills can support employability and confidence when paired with trusted, personal guidance. In rural communities, that combination can make a meaningful difference.
